Thomas’s Barbershop is on a mission to give the modern male a groomed look reminiscent of a more glamourous era. And indeed stepping into this wood-paneled, tonic-scented den is like going back in time (with the exception of the flat-screen TV showing the sports channel). I recently accompanied a gentleman friend to Thomas’s while he received the “ultimate experience”: a haircut, hot shave, whiskey, and a cigar. After 90 minutes of being shaved and snipped, steeped in hot towels, and having his hands dipped in paraffin wax, all the while sipping Dewar’s, my formerly hairy friend felt refreshed and honestly looked like he’d walked off the set of a historical film! The barbershop is manned by polite youths in dress shirts and suspenders who speak English well and are very generous with head massages; the shop also stocks an array of old-fashioned shaving implements like brushes and high-end aftershaves and other products. A range of services from facial peels to beard trims may appeal to visitors who wish to spend more time seeing Prague and less time in front of the mirror. Don’t want to leave your hotel room? Thomas’s will come to you—for details inquire via e-mail or telephone.
