Anyone who follows this blog knows about my passion for classic Czech circus (see my interview with retired ringleader Ladislav Knos and my review of the famous Berousek circus).

The Czech Republic is also renowned for its contemporary circus scene and beginning August 18 the annual Letní Letná Festival of New Circus and Theater will, for two weeks, transform a corner of Prague's Letná park into a circus village showcasing the best of modern Czech and world circus performances.

I have attended this colorful fest for several years now and am always satisfied with the daily fun on offer which ranges from the family friendly (Bubbles! Juggling workshops! Puppet shows!) to more sophisticated shows, many combining elements of cabaret and vaudeville with sexy acrobatics.

If you plan to attend this summer, look for performances listed with a blue smiley face which indicates English-friendliness. One show that looks worthy this year is a Czech circus performance inspired by the California retro sounds of the Beach Boys.

Fear not, if you don't make it to Letní Letná there is also a winter edition (LeDní Letná) planned for December 2016, time and place TBA.

The modern circus enthusiast visiting Prague should also try to catch a performance at the newly established venue Jatka 78, a former slaughterhouse in the Holešovice market district that opened as a multi-functional art and performance space a couple years ago. Here you will find a rich line-up of modern dance and new circus from resident troupe Cirk la Putyka.

I have attended a performance at Jatka 78 and liked it very much. From the décor (industrial feel with jumble-sale furnishings) to the crowd (young Czech people mingling with an artsy older crowd and hip foreigners) it is a fun experience and well worth the jaunt out of the center for those who are staying in central Prague.

Tickets are on sale now for next season's shows which begin in September and run throughout the year. The venue also regularly hosts circus workshops and classes and performances for kids.
