If burgers, barbecue, and Bowie are your thing, make sure to reserve a table at The Tavern while you’re in town. Located on the northeast fringe of Prague’s Riegrovy Sady park it’s just the kind of unpretentious dining spot that I find somewhat lacking in Prague. The signature free-range, grass-fed, all-beef Lokal burger is consistently named one of the city’s best and I cannot disagree. Neither does the tangy, red-coleslaw-topped BBQ pulled pork sandwichThe Tavern is one of the few places in Europe making authentic American BBQ—disappoint. Of two veggie burgers offered, the Spinach Bean Bomb, a successful combo of spinach, white beans, and walnuts stands out. The fries may be the only misstep, though dipping sauces (Ranch! In Prague!) make up for their skinniness. Homemade desserts include dense fudge brownies and lemon pound cake and, on occasion, pies made with fruit from the owner’s own urban garden colony. Creative cocktails (The Dude’s White Russian) and local microbrews (don’t miss the Easy Rider American Pale Ale by Pivovar Nomád) are the perfect accompaniment to this menu of burger-joint classics. And while The Tavern is owned by an American husband-and-wife expat duo, the enthusiastic waitstaff is pure local color. Note that reservations are a must for dinner and are accepted on-line only.
