Those who have read my book know that fading Socialist-era Kotva department store is a favorite for stationery, Schleich plastic animals, and kitchen supplies. And while it does feature a somewhat overpriced play area, I’ve recently discovered another family-friendly reason to visit: the T-Anker terrace restaurant on the roof. Opened in 2013 and a bit of a secret even among locals, this sky-high beer garden has a lot going for it including ten different kinds of local microbrew on tap, consistently good grilled fare, and a playground with swings, slides, a climbing structure, and a playhouse for the smallest patrons. But the true star of the show here is the absolutely dazzling view of Prague’s ancient rooftops that stretches all the way to Letná and beyond. During our recent visit, a number of families—and dogs!—were dining beneath covered picnic tables, appreciating the blue skies and spires. Crayons, coloring books, and a high chair were immediately brought to our table and our waiter exercised an impressive level of patience with the amount of time it took us to settle in and select drinks. One would expect such a view to come with a hefty price tag but nothing on the menu is astronomically priced. Note that the elevator that takes you to the restaurant is a bit narrow and, if you have a bulkier stroller, only fits about three people. You’ll have to navigate the two steps leading down into the restaurant if you want to use the WC (and there are no changing tables there) but chances are you will not, under any circumstances, want to linger inside once you have seen the glorious view.
