Dining & Drinking

Published on March 09th, 2017 in Dining & Drinking

Next in our series of occasional blog posts focusing on classic cocktails and how to make them, we present the most classic of all cocktails: the venerable Old Fashioned.

Originating sometime in the 1800s, this bold and refreshing whiskey-based beverage has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity in recent years that can be attributed not only to the rise of cocktail culture in general, but also its iconic status as Don Draper’s preferred libation.

While there are many possible variations in terms of ingredients and preparation style, the basic recipe for an Old Fashioned is the same. At its most elemental, it involves muddling together some sugar and some bitters (Angostura or similar) and then adding whiskey and ice. Some folks like to use bourbon, but we find it too sweet – use good rye instead.

While some bartenders will build the entire drink in the glass and then add ice, others (including us) prefer to mix them up in a cocktail shaker and then strain into a glass with fresh ice. This is especially useful if you’re making several at once.

Other options involve adding fruit, juice, or club soda when muddling the sugar and bitters, as well as garnishes ranging from maraschino cherries to orange slices to lemon peels… so again, why not experiment?

Here’s how we like to make them.

Old Fashioned Cocktail

·         1 teaspoon sugar (or 1 sugar cube – or 1 tsp. simple syrup)

·         3-4 dashes Angostura bitters

·         1 small splash orange juice (or 1 slice of orange)

·         1 small splash club soda

·         3 oz. rye whiskey

·         Twist of orange peel (optional)

Add all the ingredients except rye to a shaker and muddle until sugar has dissolved. Add ice, then rye. Stir well and strain into a Double Old-Fashioned glass equipped with more ice. Garnish with orange peel, if using.
